Union main programme areas and activities.

Economic Empowerment

(Capacity of PwDs to engage in income generating)
  • Training PwDs in business management and Income Generation Activities (IGAs).
  • Support model IGAs for advocacy
  • Conduct monitoring and support supervision to group IGAs
  • Mobilization of PwDs into groups for registration and linkage to livelihood development programmes.
  • Support PwDs Groups to have access to information on improved products and markets
  • Capacity building in appropriate technology
  • Provide PwDs farmer groups with agricultural inputs.

Disability and HIV & AIDS

  • Building capacity of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and Sub county Associations on HIV&AIDS.
  • Strengthen the research component on HIV&AIDS and disability so as to have information to guide service provision.
  • Encouraging adoption of community-based HIV&AIDS service provision models (CDDP and CCLAD) that are cost-effective-strengthening the structures JIDU created.
  • Build capacity of HIV&AIDS service providers on disability issues like communication using sign language to PwDs on HIV&AIDS).
  • Conduct advocacy meetings for government, policy makers, service providers and CSOs in issues pertaining HIV&AIDS and disability.

Networking and coordination

  • Net working with other players in human rights, Legal services and building coalition and strategic alliances
  • Attend local and international meetings and conferences on Disability issues 
  • Form strategic partnership with other institutions on disability issues
  • Capacity strengthening for staff in networking and coordination.
  • Develop and implement Management Information system (MIS).
  • Joint review meetings for the advocacy agenda and Information Strategy.
  • Develop coordination framework for regional coordination and collaboration

Institutional Capacity Strengthening

  • Conduct General Assembly, Executive, annual and board meetings.
  • Strengthen BUDU reporting mechanisms
  • Conduct regular feedback meetings for all BUDU members and stakeholders
  • Conduct induction training for BUDU board
  • Support the governance systems of DPOs and Sub county associations
  • Establishing a comprehensive and integrated M&E system
  • Carry out organizational development to streamline all functions of BUDU and the management structure.
  • Training of BUDU staff in identified capacity gaps.
  • Annual work planning and reviews
  • Review of BUDU policies.
  • Conduct fundraising through proposal writing and other activities.
  • Build capacity for BUDU members.
  • Provide technical support to DPOs and Sub county Associations.

Disability and Human Rights

  • Community sensitization to promote positive attitudes and support cultural values that benefit PwDs at the community level
  • Training on human rights and responsibilities in service delivery to strengthen capacities of communities and social service providers in government and private sector to provide disability friendly services
  • Advocating for the availability and utilization of affordable assistive devices and appliances.
  • Litigation as a means of reducing violation of rights of PwDs
  • Civic education on political systems and how JIDU can work within them.
  • Conduct action research to inform advocacy
  • Dissemination of research findings to stakeholders
  • Media campaign ( TV, Radio talk shows and press conferences)
  • Translation of IEC materials into user friendly formats
